Course description Osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint is very common and increasingly affects us as we age. The anatomy and biomechanics of the CMC joint are complex and understanding this is helpful in the assessment and treatment of this condition. This module will cover the anatomy and biomechanics and apply this knowledge to the presentation of OA CMCJ. Ample illustrations help with comprehension of this complex anatomy and activities are interspaced throughout.
The module explores the role of the thumb in function, classification of grip and common patterns of deformity. Classification of OA thumbs, signs and symptoms and clinical assessment are discussed. More detailed assessment will be covered in module two.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this module the health professional will be able to:
- Discuss epidemiology, aetiology and pathogenesis of OA CMC
- Understand the biomechanics of the CMCJ and the relevance to the development of OA
- List the muscles which act on the thumb and their actions
- Understand the role of the thumb in function
- Understand the Nalebuff and Eaton Littler classifications
- Gain initial skills in assessment of the base of the thumb
