Course Description The PIPJ is a small joint with complex digital anatomy and therefore complex mechanics of movement. It is a joint that is commonly injured as well as affected by acquired conditions such as arthritis. We all know that PIPJ’s are challenging to treat and often remain stiff, painful and limited in range of motion after injury. An understanding of the details of the bony, tendonous and ligamentous anatomy will enable therapists and doctors to assess and treat this difficult joint in a specific and more effective manner.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module the health professional will be able to:

  • Gain information on the basic functional anatomy of the hand
  • Understand the function of the PIPJ in a variety of grips and grip patterns
  • Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the anatomy of
    • Bone and joint
    • Ligaments
    • Muscle and tendon – intrinsic and extrinsic
  • Use the anatomy workbooks to test and confirm your knowledge of the anatomy

Understand the functions of the interossei and lumbricals in normal movement and grips.
